Hole in the schedule

I can't say I was surprised. After all, I've been commenting on it for months in the weekly ratings posts.

But it was still a little jarring when I watched Jeopardy tonight on CBS duopoly station KTXA, and the next time slot on the schedule showed a repeat of sister station KTVT's newscast. That next slot at 6:30 PM used to be where Millionaire lived. (There are still a couple worse slots for the show elsewhere on the schedule. But they disappear next week.) Yes, the show's twenty-year journey really is coming to an end in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

TV shows come and go all the time, so it's a little ridiculous to get wistful over Millionaire's demise. But despite its detractors, the show was always an interesting and suspenseful quizzer that passed the time agreeably.

Several pundits have remarked that the show will return sooner or later, and I tend to agree. The format is rock solid, and every old game show seems to be getting another day in the broadcast sun lately. But for now there's only a newscast where Millionaire's money tree used to grow. Two decades of a game show are almost over.
