Sympathy for the Drew

A thread on Game Show Forum ranks game show hosts on various shows. Predictably, most of the rankings pertain to shows that are long since buried. At this point not too many people outside the oldies boards are likely to care whether Tom Kennedy was better than Jack Barry on Break the Bank. (Don't have an opinion myself.)

But a few comments relate to hosts on shows that are still running. And again predictably, the older guys almost always get the nod. Only one post even mentions the Antichrist himself, Steve Harvey. And he gets dumped way down the list of Family Feud hosts, ahead of only Richard Karn (something of a surprise for Game Show Forum) and Louie Anderson.

Don't bother pointing out how Harvey has superbly restored the franchise and garnered a bunch of Emmy noms. Real-world measures of success matter little on the oldies boards.

Which brings me to Drew Carey. You can't expect the oldies board to end all oldies boards to like Drew. But even I was a little surprised at the level of animus on GSF. Only two posters even mentioned Carey, and they ranked him dead last among The Price is Right hosts, after a bunch of guys like Dennis James and Doug Davidson.

Uh, really? Drew has kept TPiR going for more than a decade as the most-watched daytime show on TV, not to mention helping to win three Emmys for best game show. Since 2011 TPiR is the only show besides Jeopardy to win the award. I'm not into show biz self-congratulation much, but that has to count for something.

Drew just gets no love on the game show Interwebs, which of course lean heavily toward older-is-better. But there are consolations in the real world. One of those celeb net worth sites estimates his personal fortune at $165 million. So I doubt that he cares much about Game Show Forum rankings.
